No Husband, Great Bread

Welcome to Spinsterly Bakes
Small-batch sourdough, made to order, shipped across the Commonwealth
Somewhere along the way, "spinster" became an insult. A woman alone, past her expiration date, presumably weeping into her cat's fur.
We'd like to introduce you to the actual spinster: a woman with a full kitchen, a fed starter, a strong opinion, and absolutely no one to ask permission from.
Welcome to Spinsterly Bakes.
Meet Li-Li
Every loaf we make starts with our sourdough starter, Li-Li. She lives on the counter. She gets fed on schedule. She is, functionally, a very demanding pet who pays rent in bread.
She's also the reason our bread tastes the way it does. No commercial yeast, no shortcuts, no rushing her along because we're impatient. Sourdough takes as long as it takes, and Li-Li has never once cared about our plans. The reward is a crackling golden crust, an open tender crumb, and that mellow, complicated tang you only get from a starter someone actually looks after.
From her we build the classic boule, a butter croissant loaf worked through by hand, a chocolate sourdough dark enough to be suspicious, brie and honey fig, Mediterranean olive, rosemary parmesan. And we don't waste her, either — the discard goes straight into our cookies, which is why a Spinsterly chocolate chip cookie has a depth that a standard recipe never gets near.
Small batch means small batch
Not a marketing phrase. An actual constraint.
This is a home kitchen, and everything is made to order, by hand, in quantities one person can reasonably manage. Real Ghirardelli chocolate. Real butter. Real lemon zest. A family fudge recipe we're not sharing with you or anyone. Scones that are moist instead of the sawdust you've been trained to expect.
We can't make ten thousand of anything, and we're not trying to. You get bread that came out of an oven this week, made by someone whose name you know.
Bread with a side of sass
Spinsterly Bakes is part of Spinsterly Co, and if you've spent any time in our shop you already know what you're getting. We're bold, we're unapologetic, and we've never been especially interested in being palatable.
That carries over to the bakery. We believe in feeding people. We believe a table should have room at it for everyone — queer folks, loud women, tired people, the ones who've been told to make themselves smaller. We believe softness and sharpness can live in the same person, or the same loaf, without contradiction.
You do not have to agree with us to eat our bread. But you should probably know who baked it.
Shipping across Virginia
We ship within the Commonwealth of Virginia only. We're a home-based bakery working under Virginia's cottage food laws, which means we can sell and deliver in-state but can't cross state lines. If you're outside Virginia, we're genuinely sorry — send your Virginia friends a link and make them share.
Everything is made to order, so give us a little lead time. Li-Li doesn't do rush jobs.
Come get some bread
Sourdough. Cookies. Scones. Brownies. Fudge. All of it made slowly, by hand, in small batches, for no one's approval but our own.
No husband, great bread.
